GIS Toolbox for risk evaluation

Open Source and

Free GIS

The Open source software world is growing day by day, and GIS programs are not an exception of this process. This dynamic situation requires a continuous research work to be updated. Be flexible and open minded is important for introducing new tools or methodologies that, at the end, will improve the quality of the work.

The variety, the potential, and the quality of free available tools to work with spatial data make them a good alternative to proprietary software. Although a wide range of open source software is available, the right choice of the program does not depend only on the quantity and quality of the tools. The nature of the project, the knowledge of the developers, and the time needed to become acquainted with the new software are also important features to be taken into account.

GIS toolbox provides some example of  GIS Open Source solution for a specific water-related project. A very small part of the currently available tools and open source software have been evaluated.

Current GIS solutions generally includes use of different specialized software for each part of the project, like DBMS, desktop GIS, or CAD programs.
